Most house lockouts come down to a key left inside, a lost key or a lock that has stopped turning. The right method depends on which of those it is, and on the lock type.

Who calls us about this

  • The key is inside the house.
  • The key is lost or stolen.
  • The deadbolt is stuck or the key turns but the bolt will not move.
  • A keypad or smart lock has stopped working.

How the visit goes

  1. Call with the address and tell us what kind of lock is on the door.
  2. We confirm arrival and price range.
  3. We check ID and right of access on the doorstep.
  4. We open the door, test the lock, and tell you if the door or lock needs repair.

What we look at

  • The lock type: deadbolt, knob, lever, keypad or multipoint
  • Whether the door is deadbolted or only latched
  • Whether a window or another door is a safer way in
  • The state of the lock, in case it should be replaced

What affects the price

The type of lock, the time of day and the distance. Multipoint locks and locks that have been damaged usually take longer than a standard deadbolt.

Before you call

Do not force the door or use tools that can damage the frame. Find your ID, and tell us whether other keys exist, so we can advise on rekeying.

When this is not the right fix

If you are a tenant and the landlord controls the lock, we may need the landlord’s permission. We will not open a door for anyone who cannot show they belong there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will you damage my door?+

We start with methods that do not damage the door. If a lock is damaged, worn or unusual, we explain the options before we choose one.

What ID do I need?+

ID showing the address, or a lease, utility bill or a message from the landlord or property manager. We cannot open a home without confirming you belong there.
