Optimizing Remote Connectivity for Electronic Deadbolts
Many smart locks use Bluetooth for local connections to save battery life. However, Bluetooth only works within a 30-foot range. To control your lock remotely from work or vacation, you need a WiFi gateway bridge.
How a WiFi Bridge Connects
The WiFi gateway is a small adapter plug that sits in an outlet between your smart lock and your home router.
- Local connection: It communicates with the deadbolt via low-power Bluetooth.
- Network connection: It connects to your home network via 2.4GHz WiFi, forwarding your remote app commands to the lock cylinder.
Setup Recommendations
- Distance: Place the gateway within 15 feet of the door for a stable Bluetooth signal.
- Network Strength: Ensure your router provides a strong 2.4GHz signal to the outlet where the bridge is plugged in.
Planning the setup
A wifi gateway or bridge lets a Bluetooth lock connect to the internet so you can operate it remotely. Choose a spot within range of the lock and close to a power outlet, and avoid places where metal or thick walls block the signal.
What the technician does
We install and adjust the lock, pair the gateway, connect it to your wifi and test locking and unlocking from the app. We also check the door alignment, since a misaligned bolt can make an otherwise good lock unreliable.
After installation
Set a strong account password, add users with the right access and confirm what happens when power or internet is lost. Keep a backup method such as a keypad or key. See smart locks and home platforms and our smart lock installation service.
