Being shut out of your own home is a specific kind of stress. You are not in danger, usually, but you are cold, late or carrying groceries, and every option feels bad. These steps put the odds in your favour.
Pause before you try anything
The first instinct is to try a window, a credit card or a screwdriver. Most of those attempts damage the door, the frame or the weatherstripping, and turn a simple lockout into a repair. Take a minute to work out what is actually locked.
Work through this short list
- Try every door. Garage entry doors, patio doors and side doors are often unlocked.
- Call whoever might have a key. A partner, a roommate, a neighbour or a landlord.
- Check for a keypad or smart lock code that you can use from a phone.
- Do not climb. Second-floor windows and balconies cause injuries.
- Get somewhere warm while you wait, especially in winter.
Condo and rental lockouts
In a condo, the building may have a key on file or a concierge who can help. In a rental, the landlord or property manager is the first call. If you call a locksmith, expect to show ID and proof you live there.
What the locksmith needs from you
Tell us the address, the type of lock (deadbolt, knob, lever, keypad) and whether the deadbolt is engaged. A photo of the lock face helps. Ask for the price range and the arrival estimate before agreeing to a visit.
After you are back inside
Think about why you were locked out. If the key is lost, rekey the locks so a stranger cannot use it. If you keep locking yourself out, consider a keypad lock. If the lock is worn, replace it.
