Evaluating the Performance and Cost of Premium Locks
Standard deadbolts bought at local hardware stores provide basic protection but are vulnerable to forced entry and bypass methods. Upgrading to a certified high-security deadbolt significantly increases your defense. Here is how they compare.
1. Resistance to Lock Picking and Bumping
Standard locks have simple pin channels that make them easy targets for picking picks or bump keys. High-security locks (like Medeco or Mul-T-Lock) use patented dual-locking systems, sidebar mechanisms, and angled key cuts, making them virtually pick-proof.
2. Solid Hardened Steel Reinforcements
Cheap deadbolts are made of soft brass or zinc alloys that can be drilled out or sheared with heavy pliers. Premium deadbolts feature hardened steel inserts and spinning collar rings that deflect drill bits and resist pipe-wrench prying attacks.
3. Key Control (Restricted Duplication)
Anyone can duplicate a standard key at a retail kiosk. High-security keys require a specific key card and signature verification at professional locksmith shops. This prevents unauthorized copies by house guests, contractors, or tenants.
What the grade means
Deadbolts are graded by tests for strength, cycling and security. A higher grade generally means a stronger bolt, better internal parts and a longer life. High-security models add features such as hardened inserts and restricted keys.
Decide on need
For a low-risk interior door, standard is enough. For an exterior door in a busy area or a rental with many tenants, a higher grade is worth the small extra cost.
Do the frame too
The best deadbolt fails if the frame is weak. See strike plates and long screws and our deadbolt installation service.
