A business door does not need to be a fortress. It needs to be harder to defeat than the doors next to it and easy to use by day. These upgrades give the most benefit for the money.
1. Check the door and frame first
A door that flexes or a frame that splits is the weak point. Feel for movement, look for cracks and check the strike area.
2. Use a quality deadbolt and strike
A deadbolt with a long throw, and a heavy strike plate fastened with long screws into the framing, resists kick-ins far better than a latch alone. See deadbolt installation.
3. Fix the hinges
Hinges on the outside of the door can be attacked if the pins are exposed. Use non-removable pins or security studs. Tighten or replace worn hinges.
4. Add a good closer
A door that closes and latches itself will not be left ajar. Adjust it so it is not slamming. See door closer service.
5. Consider glass protection
Glass in or beside a door invites break-in. Security film, laminated glass or a grille can help. Do not block exits.
6. Control the keys
List who holds keys and rekey when staff leave. For larger teams, a master key system helps.
7. Think about lighting and sightlines
A well-lit doorway that is visible from the street deters casual attempts.
Balance security with safety
Exit doors must open from inside without a key when the business is open. Do not chain or block them.
