Securing Private Documents and Valuable Possessions
We often focus on exterior door security while neglecting interior drawers, filing cabinets, and document safes. If you’ve lost the keys to your office cabinet or purchased a used safe with unknown duplicate keys, a locksmith can rekey or replace the lock cylinder.
1. Filing Cabinets and Desk Drawers
Most office furniture uses simple disc tumbler locks.
- How it’s rekeyed: If you have lost the keys, a locksmith can swap out the core in seconds using a control key, or replace the cylinder.
2. Specialty Locks on Personal Safes
Small personal safes use key locks, digital keypads, or combination dials.
- Mechanical dials: If you forget the combination, a locksmith can reset the dial wheels by scoping or dialing techniques.
- Digital keypads: Electronic safes can have their codes reset or master override keys programmed if the primary password is lost.
Which small locks can be rekeyed
Many filing cabinets, desk drawers, lockers and cash boxes use small wafer or pin locks that can be rekeyed or replaced. Brand and age matter: some newer cabinet locks are designed to be swapped as a unit, while older ones may be rekeyed in place.
What we need to know
Tell us the brand, whether the lock is worn or damaged and how many keys you want made for the new setup. A photo of the lock face and the number stamped on it helps us bring the right parts.
Why do it
After a staff change, a moved office or a lost key, rekeying stops old keys from working. Safes with keys work differently; some can be rekeyed, others need a replacement lock. Combination changes are described in our post on resetting electronic deadbolt codes.
