Long Branch and New Toronto Bungalows: Lock Upgrades

Long Branch and New Toronto have many older bungalows and small houses. Their doors have often been repainted, rehung and patched. Security upgrades need to fit that reality.

Start with the frame

Old frames can be dry, split or fixed with short screws. A strong deadbolt in a weak frame is a waste. Check the frame first.

Strike plates

Replace short screws with 75 mm (3 inch) screws that reach the stud. Fit a reinforced strike plate. This inexpensive step improves resistance to kicks.

Deadbolt

Add or replace a deadbolt with a solid bolt and a good cylinder. See deadbolt installation.

Old cylinders

If the existing locks are decades old, replace them. Worn cylinders and unknown keys are a risk. See lock change.

Side and back doors

These are often forgotten. Give them the same attention as the front.

Windows and basement doors

Basement entrances are a common route in. A solid door and a good lock help.

Storm doors

An older storm door can hide a weak main door. Check both.

Smart locks

If you want one, make sure the door closes squarely first.

What we find in older Etobicoke homes

Bungalows built decades ago often have light wooden frames with short screws, single-cylinder knobs and worn strike plates. Paint over hardware, swollen doors from humid basements and past repairs can leave gaps around the latch. These are usually cheaper to fix than to ignore.

A sensible order of work

Begin with the strike and frame, then upgrade the deadbolt, and last consider decorative hardware. If the door looks original and you want to keep it, we can fit modern hardware in a way that respects the style. Ask for a written list of what was done for your records.
