Locked Out of a Brampton Townhouse? What to Check Before You Call

Townhouses and semis are the backbone of Brampton’s housing, and they lock people out in predictable ways. Knowing your door helps a lot.

The usual setups

Most Brampton townhouses have a front door with a deadbolt and a knob or handle set, a door from the garage to the house, and a sliding or French door to the back. Each can be the reason you cannot get in, and each can be the way in.

Check these first

  1. The garage. If you can open the garage with a remote or keypad, the door from the garage to the house is sometimes unlocked.
  2. The back. Sliding patio doors are often left on the latch.
  3. A neighbour or family member with a key.
  4. A smart lock code, if you have one, from the app.

Do not climb

Balconies and upper windows in townhouse rows are dangerous. A fall is worse than a locksmith’s fee.

What to tell us

Which door is locked, whether the deadbolt is turned, whether the key is inside, lost or broken, and the brand of lock if you can see it. Send a photo of the lock face.

Landlords and tenants

If you rent, the landlord or property manager may need to authorize the work. Have your lease or an email from them ready, plus ID with the address.

After the door is open

If a key is lost, rekey before someone finds it. If the deadbolt was stiff, ask us to check the door alignment. Townhouses shift, and a sticking bolt is often a strike problem.
