The Hidden Risks of Attempting DIY Pin Tumbler Changes
You can buy DIY rekeying kits online for specific lock brands. While rekeying your own locks seems like a fun weekend project, it requires a high level of precision. A tiny mistake can permanently ruin your lock cylinder.
How DIY Rekeying Fails
- Pins falling into the housing: A lock cylinder consists of bottom pins, top pins, and tiny springs. If you pull the cylinder plug out without using a specialized plug follower tool, the top pins and springs will collapse into the chamber, jamming the cylinder.
- Incorrect pin heights: Even a 0.01-inch height error in a replacement pin can prevent the cylinder from turning or lead to key sticking over time.
What a kit actually asks you to do
A rekeying kit gives you replacement pins and a small tool set. The job involves removing the cylinder, taking out the plug, swapping pins to match a new key and reassembling without dropping any springs. On a familiar brand with good instructions it is possible, but a single misplaced pin can leave a lock that turns roughly or not at all.
Where DIY goes wrong
Common mistakes include releasing the plug too quickly so the springs and pins scatter, mixing pin sizes, installing the plug backwards and forgetting to test each key. If the cylinder has been damaged, or the door is misaligned, a kit will not fix the underlying problem.
When it is better to call
For rentals, older locks, high-security cylinders or a set of doors that need to match, a technician saves time and avoids damage. A professional rekey also comes with a check of the strike and latch. See our rekeying service and read about how to spot a scam so you choose a reliable provider.
