VMC Condos: Suite Door Locks and Building Fobs

High-rise living around the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre brings a shared system of doors, fobs and rules. The key is knowing which parts are yours.

Two systems, two owners

  • The building controls lobby doors, elevators, parking and amenity rooms, usually with fobs.
  • Your suite door lock is typically your responsibility, but subject to the corporation’s rules.

Lost fob

Report it to management so it can be deactivated. A lost fob is a security risk until it is cancelled.

Locked out of your suite

Call management first; some buildings keep a suite key. If you call a locksmith, expect to show ID that connects you to the unit and to be asked to coordinate with the building.

Changing your suite lock

Check the declaration and rules. Some corporations require that master or emergency access be preserved, or that certain lock types be used. Fire-rated suite doors have their own requirements.

Smart locks

Many corporations allow them if they meet specific criteria. See our smart lock installation page and ask before you buy.

Mailboxes and lockers

These belong to different parties. Mailbox locks are usually Canada Post or the corporation. Storage locker locks are yours.

Rekeying instead of changing

If you just need to control keys after buying, a rekey may be possible without changing the hardware.

Practical tips for VMC residents

Towers near the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre station have busy lobbies and access-controlled elevators. When you contact a locksmith, tell them the tower name, the floor and whether a visitor fob is needed to reach it. If the concierge can be phoned in advance, the visit runs faster.

Suite lock changes

The suite door is often the corporation’s concern for fire and access. Check whether your declaration limits changes and ask before hiring anyone to replace a cylinder. Keep written approval.
