Industrial units in Concord and elsewhere in Vaughan are busy places. Deliveries, staff and visitors mean the personnel door gets used all day. A few habits keep it secure.
Know who is responsible
Read your lease. Some landlords control exterior doors and locks; others expect tenants to handle them. Before you change a lock, confirm who authorizes it.
Keys and codes
List who has keys or codes. Remove access when staff leave. If a key is unaccounted for, rekey the door.
Personnel door maintenance
- Test the closer: it should close and latch the door every time.
- Test the exit device: it should release under light pressure.
- Look at the hinges and the frame.
- Check the weatherstrip.
See door closers and panic bars.
After-hours access
If you need to let a delivery in after hours, consider a keypad or access control. See access control systems.
Loading areas
Overhead doors are specialist equipment, but the personnel door beside them is our territory. Make sure it locks and is not propped open.
Fire safety
Exit doors must always open from inside. Do not chain or block them. Fire-rated doors have specific requirements.
After a break-in
Photograph the damage, call police and secure the door. We can help make it safe. See break-in repair.
Getting help
Tell us the unit address and who owns the building. See the Vaughan page.
Know where your responsibility ends
In multi-tenant industrial buildings, the landlord may control the exterior doors while the tenant controls the unit door. Confirm who owns each door and each lock before paying for changes.
After-hours access
Warehouses often have staff arriving early or late. Consider keypad or fob systems with logs so you know who came in, and set clear rules for issuing codes. Personnel doors that are opened often need regular maintenance.
