Strengthening the Weakest Link in Home Security
Sliding glass patio doors are prime targets for burglars. They are often located in private backyards, their standard latches are relatively weak, and they can sometimes be lifted off their tracks if not properly aligned.
1. Install a Security Bar (Charley Bar)
Standard sliding door locks are simple hooks that can be pried open with a screwdriver.
- The Fix: Place a heavy-duty security bar (or a cut wooden dowel) in the slider track. This physically blocks the door from opening even if the lock is fully bypassed.
2. Add an Auxiliary Foot Lock
An auxiliary lock installed at the bottom or top of the door frame provides a second locking point.
- The Fix: Foot locks engage a hardened steel pin directly into the frame, preventing the door from being slid open or lifted off its tracks.
3. Apply Shatterproof Window Film
Glass doors are vulnerable to impact entry.
- The Fix: Apply a clear security window film. The film holds shattered glass shards together, making it extremely difficult for an intruder to break the pane and step inside.
Why patio doors are targeted
Latches on many sliding doors are small hooks, and the door can sometimes be lifted from its track.
Fixes
A track-mounted bar or block, a secondary keyed lock and anti-lift devices raise security. Check the screws holding the frame.
