When is it Time to Replace or Rekey Your Door Locks?
Your home’s locks are the primary defense against unauthorized access. While deadbolts and key cylinders are designed to last for years, they do not remain secure indefinitely. Understanding how often to change your house locks is essential for protecting your family and belongings.
1. Immediately After Moving into a New Home
This is the most critical rule of residential security. When you buy a house or sign a new lease, you have no way of knowing how many duplicate keys are in circulation. Former owners, realtors, contractors, cleaning services, or neighbors might still hold copies. Rekeying or replacing the locks on your move-in day should be non-negotiable.
2. After a Lockout or Stolen Key Incident
If you lose your keyring or have your bags stolen, the security of your home is compromised. Even if you get back inside with the help of an emergency service, you must rekey the cylinders immediately to invalidate the lost set of keys.
3. Every 5 to 7 Years (General Wear & Tear)
Locks contain moving mechanical parts. Over time, internal springs weaken, pins wear down, and keyways widen. If your key requires wiggling to turn, or if the lock sticks in cold weather, it is time for an upgrade. Worn-out locks are easier for intruders to pick or bypass.
4. Following a Relationship or Tenant Change
If a roommate moves out, a domestic worker leaves, or a relationship ends, changing the locks provides peace of mind. Rekeying is a fast, budget-friendly way to restrict access without purchasing brand-new hardware.
