Caledon’s trails, lookouts and conservation areas draw visitors from across the GTA. Locking keys in the car is one of the more common ways to spoil the day.
Check the obvious
Is every door locked? Is the trunk or hatch open? Is your phone signal working? In some spots signal is weak, so walk to a better one if it is safe.
Do not break the window
The cost and mess of a broken window is much greater than a locksmith’s fee. Glass in a parking area is a hazard.
What to tell the dispatcher
- The exact place: the trailhead name and the road.
- The vehicle: make, model, year.
- Whether the key is inside or missing.
- Whether anyone or any animal is inside.
If a person or pet is inside, call 911 first.
Ownership
Have your registration and ID. If they’re in the car, tell us; we may use other proof, such as a phone photo or the insurance app.
Timing
Rural locations take longer to reach. We give an honest estimate and stay in touch. If your phone battery is low, tell us where you can be found.
Safety
Stay near the road if you can. Carry water and a warm layer. Tell someone where you are.
Prevent it
Keep a spare key with a trusted person, not on the vehicle. Use a fob-plus-key-blade setup.
See our car lockout service and the Caledon page.
Remote locations need extra planning
Cell coverage at trailheads can be patchy, and parking areas may be far from help. Tell someone where you are before you start your hike, and keep your phone charged. A spare key kept by a friend or family member is more reliable than one hidden on the vehicle.
What helps a technician find you
Give the name of the trailhead, the parking lot and any landmarks, and share your location by text if you can. Stay near the car and in a safe place. Have your registration and ID ready for proof of ownership.
